Background

Bickley Outdoor Recreation Camp was officially opened on 3 June 1945 by the Minister of Education and Social Services, Hon John Tonkin MLA. Through the National Fitness Council's desire to promote healthy recreation for youth, Bickley was established.

The original buildings consisted of a lecture hut, kitchen, store and shower blocks. The campers were accommodated in tents. Many of the state's youth groups were involved in developing Bickley to what it is today. These included Boy Scouts, Girl Guides, YMCA, YWCA and various church groups.
