This year Active 09, your Sport and Recreation Industry Conference, will focus on people, particularly young people and community. If you work in any part of the sport and recreation industry, community development, social policy development, law and order, facilities management and programming then this conference is for you.

Highlights of the conference include:

• Best selling author Richard Louv speaking about 'nature-deficit disorder' and the need to reacquaint our young people with nature and unstructured play.  
• A whole stream on Public Open Space issues.
• Sean Tuohey the founder of PeacePlayers International. PeacePlayers International has won the prestigious Laureus Sport for Good Award and the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage. He and his organisation have effectively used sport programs to bring together historically divided areas such as South Africa, Northern Ireland, Israel and Cyprus.  
• Marcus Akuhata-Brown, an outstanding youth educator and gifted communicator, has led a number of innovative programs around the world focused on addressing the learning and developmental needs of youth at risk.  
• Associate Professor Geoff Woolcock from Griffith University will share his work on making communities 'Child Friendly by Design'.
• A stream especially tailored by the West Australian Sports Federation and state sporting association representatives. At this interactive stream delegates will have the opportunity to question our sport leaders on how our industry is or should be administered and in particular the role of non government organisations. This stream will also explore the role of the coach as a mentor, and delegates will hear from successful clubs and what they have done to remain successful.  
• A recreation management stream focusing on practical issues including:

  • How to program for CaLd communities

• Mark McCrindle is back. One of Australia's leading demographers, Mark will speak on what makes Australia great. Learn about what we feel is great about our country, and tap into that understanding when you develop a strategic plan for your community.

Active 09 will be held at Burswood Entertainment Complex on Thursday 26 and Friday 27 November. This year, the conference will be held in conjunction with the biennial Sport and Recreation Industry Awards. Winners will be announced at a gala dinner on Friday 27 November.
