Sport and Recreation Minister Terry Waldron announced the 2009/10 grants, 58.8 per cent of which were for projects in regional WA.

Mr Waldron said sport and recreation was a valuable part of the everyday lives of all Western Australians and the boost in spending on grassroots sport would have broad community benefits.

"Participation in sport and recreation is vital for building stronger, healthier, happier and safer communities. It provides benefits far beyond the physical, including better social, educational and mental health outcomes," the Minister said.

"This is why we have increased the CSRFF fund from $9million to $20million per annum.

"As we also work to counteract increasing levels of obesity, it has never been more important to ensure we support development of basic infrastructure to increase participation in sport and recreation."
