The Department of Sport and Recreration (DSR) in partnership with Healthway is launching a new and improved Smarter than Smoking Country Sport Scholarship Program for 2009/10.
It is envisaged the scholarships, which have been traditionally advertised in February, will now most likely be promoted in April and May, with a four week lead-up to applications closing.
Assessment is likely to take place in early June with the announcements and scholarship award presentation evenings planned for late June or early July for the 2009/10 year of competition.
Exact schedules and dates have yet to be finalised, however, this information can be used as a broad guideline for planning for coaches, athletes and parents.
The improved scholarship program will help DSR reach more regional athletes and provide greater support services and financial assistance.
Not only is the Smarter than Smoking Country Sport Scholarship Program an important vehicle for spreading the ‘Smarter Than Smoking' message, but also a vital support mechanism for providing valuable financial assistance to talented athletes in regional WA.
Over the past 13 years, the program has supported world class athletes such as tennis players Jessica Moore and Brittany Sheed, Narrogin hockey player Bevan George (who was an Athens gold medallist), basketballer Mark Worthington (a gold medallist for the Australia Post Boomers team), former Orioles netballer Kodie Blay and Josie Janz who plays netball for West Coast Fever.
