The 2008/09 Trails Grants allocation was recently concluded. This annual program is developed, promoted and managed by the Department of Sport and Recreation. Financial support is provided by Lotterywest.

Categories are planning, construction, major upgrades and marketing and promotion.

Now in its 12th year, the program has provided significant assistance to trails groups and the community.

The process and cooperation required by community groups has assisted not only in the development and promotion of trails but provides a “vehicle” where effective community capacity and cooperation is developed and will remain as a significant benefit over time. For example:

  • Denmark-based “Green Skills Inc.”, who continue to develop the fantastic Denmark-Nornalup Heritage Multi-Use Rail Trail (allocated $16,000 for two projects).
  • The Bayswater community, which will formalise walking trails and a boardwalk in Lightning Swamp bushland($60,000).
  • The Mundaring Tourist Association will promote Cycle Tourism in the Eastern Metropolitan region ($10,000).
  • The Munda Biddi Foundation will extend the long distance mountain bike trail ($100,000).
