Womensport West logoWSW aims to encourage more women and girls to participate in all aspects of sport and recreation by:
  • Providing a network and platform for women's sport and recreation groups to work together and share ideas.
  • Providing support to individuals and organisations in their efforts to redress gender inequalities.
  • Conducting projects and activities that increase the profile of women's sport and recognise the sporting achievements of women and girls.
WSW has recently introduced an induction manual for Council members to provide key historic, policy and operational organisational information.

The program's key objectives

As council members are usually busy within their own employment environment, it was important to ensure that becoming a council member and dealing with WSW was an easy process.

The manual was created to provide key information to new Council members so that they:
  1. Gain a better understanding of the organisation quickly therefore making the induction process more effective.
  2. Have key organisational documents for future reference.
  3. Have a file for future minutes, financials and updated documents.
  4. Reduce the potential demand on the office by attending to individual Council member requests for information.

Creating the program

Womensport West researched a number of similar manuals to create a suitable framework for WSW.  The comprehensive manual includes information about council structure and membership, Council operations including duties and responsibilities, guiding policies, legal requirements such as information on the constitution and by-laws, strategic planning advice, finances, program products, marketing advice, membership structure, events, publications and resources.

Instrumental factors in the program's success

Each new Council member is provided with a copy and guided through the manual step by step.

Highlight of the program

The induction manual allows new Council members to be adequately briefed while providing all relevant information for future reference.

Self-sustainability

The contents of the master file requires ongoing revision and updating by the office, however individual files become self sustaining.

Top Five Tips:
  1. Make the information concise and succinct.
  2. Always keep the content relevant to the reader and the organisation.
  3. Set aside the time to “induct” the new Council members either individually or as a group.
  4. Use an appropriate tool eg a two ring lever arch file with dividers.
